The DMAIC methodology is a core component of Six Sigma, standing for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. I view it as an evolution of earlier quality improvement methodologies, notably those of Dr. W. Edwards Deming and Walter A.
Shewhart.

 

DMAIC is a formal system designed to reduce process variation, improve business outcomes, enhance customer satisfaction, and reduce costs. I consider it a powerful tool within the broader framework of Lean Six Sigma, which integrates Lean’s focus on waste reduction with Six Sigma’s emphasis on quality and process consistency.

Like other quality improvement tools, applying DMAIC requires a deep understanding of
the specific processes and variations involved. This knowledge helps tailor the methodology to fit different contexts in manufacturing or service industries.
